Exhibition: Diener & Diener in Munich

The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich presents the work of the architectural office Diener & Diener. The exhibition titled "Von innen und außen bewegt – Moved from the inside and outside" will be on show until January 9, 2005.

"We always want to move something, sound out the location, the city, and sharpen or change it," says Roger Diener about his work. A formal strictness, which leads to controversial designs, characterizes the work of the respected and internationally renowned architectural office with its headquarters in Basel and Berlin – for example in the case of the Swiss embassy in Berlin: the approach marked by rationalism and a confrontation with minimalism was described in the FAZ with the words: "what at first sight appears to be a fist punch turns out to be a subtle finger play."

The exhibition is structured by the subjects "Urban views," "Library of ideas" and "Up close". The "Urban views" are clarified with 24 models and site plans. The "Library of ideas" includes the "Concept archives", a collection of the pan-European competition contributions. These ideas may still be in transformation contrary to the realized projects. In the third space, four selected buildings are presented "up close": the Swiss embassy in Berlin (1995-2000), the Rosengart collection in Lucerne (1999-2001), the Novartis Pharma Headquarter in Basel, which is currently under construction, and the planning and extension of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. Detailed models, competition and realization plans clarify the development of the concepts from planning to realization.

Since the beginning of his career, Roger Diener has been teaching: 1985-1989 as a professor at the "Ecole d'Architecture Polytechnique (EPF)" in Lausanne, as a guest professor at the "Harvard University Graduate School of Design" in Cambridge, MA, at the Vienna Architecture School, at the "Academie van Bouwkunst" in Amsterdam and the Royal Dutch Academy of the Arts in Copenhagen. Since 1999 Roger Diener has been a professor for architecture and design at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, and has been heading the studio Basel, Institut Stadt der Gegenwart at the ETH Zurich together with Jacques Herzog, Marcel Meili and Pierre de Meuron.

On October 29, 2004 Professor Roger Diener will give a lecture about his work at 6:00 p.m. in the Ernst von Siemens-Auditorium in the Pinakothek der Moderne.
