Conference: "Pictoplasma" in Berlin

The first conference about contemporary character design worldwide will take place in Berlin from October 28-30, 2004. The “Pictoplasma Conference” is all about the characters that have conquered the worlds of advertising, art, media and cityscape.

From Hello Kitty to Obey Giant: the characters are omnipresent. On poster walls, in mobile phone displays, as animations on the Internet – character design is a global graphic language since the characters don’t depend on a narrative structure, whether as branding, which promotes consumption, cute kitsch or urban art. They all have redefined the aesthetic standard of visual communication.

The Pictoplasma project began in 1999 with a comprehensive stocktaking and archiving of artistic, contemporary character design. The result is an entire archive filled with characters: you can find a collection of the material, which is important as a documentation and basis for new creations, at www.pictoplasma.com - for all, who deal with the visualization and application of character design. Alongside many lectures and events during the conference, an exhibition about “characters at war!” is presented: an entire army of characters enters as life-sized cardboard figures.
