Prince Philip Visits red dot design museum

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, will visit the red dot design museum within the framework of a state visit of the royal couple to Germany on November 4, 2004.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the President of the institution, will welcome Prince Philip at the former boiler house of Zeche Zollverein, the headquarters of the red dot design museum, and will then give him a tour of the exhibition. In the Schürerhalle, today one of the most impressive rooms of the house, Prince Philip will sign the steel book of the city of Essen and the guest book of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen.

Prince Philip has a big interest in the architecture of the boiler house, since the famous English architect Lord Norman Foster converted it into the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen had made the redesign by Norman Foster, who is famous for his redesign of the Reichstag building, a precondition for moving onto the grounds of the former coalmine in 1997. The conversion, which was the architect’s first project in Germany, turned the boiler house into the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and thus a satisfactory address for international design.

During a tour through the red dot design museum of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, which has many close ties with the British design and architectural scene and is known for its European and international commitment, the husband of the Queen will also be informed about exhibits by British designers that are shown in the exhibition.
