Japanese architects "auf Zollverein"

International competition has been decided

The premises of Zeche Zollverein, declared a cultural heritage site by UNESCO, will soon be enriched with an additional attraction. The first new building within this protected ensemble is being constructed – a building that will not only be of interest to individuals involved in the design scene. Because with it the realisation of the master plan of Rem Koolhaas (office O.M.A.) for the future of the premises continues.

The architectural office SANAA from Tokyo won an international competition. For the private school "design school zollverein" (d/s/z) a 38-meter high cube will be constructed by spring 2005; in the jury’s opinion, it simultaneously communicates both the requested formal strictness and openness. The light cube is understood as a Far Eastern pendant to the architecture of Zeche Zollverein by Schupp and Kremmer, whose architecture is reminiscent of the Bauhaus.
