Forms in Cologne
This year’s hit is the new crystallinity: when it comes to forms, the crystal is the most popular associative form, and the new crystalline shapes can be found in the sitting furniture sector in particular.
The dignity of the chair has been newly interpreted. It goes back to the origin of sitting – the throne. Grand, proud and austere forms are characteristic of seats and chairs, in which you do not just sit, but sit enthroned. On the outside the chairs are austere; on the inside soft and they offer safety in a new form. Whether as lounge, dinner or conference chairs, the new throne chairs give every place a special importance. The new sitting furniture is characterised by edged, geometrically constructed basic forms which are reminiscent of the architecture of a crystal.
Furniture as sculpture: Sculptural shapes result from organic, voluminous bodies, which are like sculptures in space. Geometric austerity next to organic designs; voluminous sitting furniture next to frames which appear to be weightless. Asymmetries and the free play with proportions are dominant trends. Opulent cushions seem to hover on their puristic base. This dramatic combination creates a surprising lightness. The subjects of lightness and weightlessness are taken to extremes with skeleton-like structures.
