Colours, Forms and Materials

Green meets Red

This year, the trend colour of recent years presents itself as a clear and fresh may green. More important, however, is the development of its complementary colour red, which now defines itself in a bright clear tone. Reminiscent of the 1980s is the appearance of the high-contrast combination of the “Sovereign” colours black, white and red.

Everything becomes Round

Although crystalline forms continue to be present, challenging the eyes of the beholders with their unusual looks, round forms have become more dominant. The circle in all its variations determines the design language of form. From voluminous, round living room landscapes and islands to the forms of chairs, tables and lamps, up to their very patterns: this year dots are very dominant. They can be found on carpets and upholstery, and – reflecting a specific form of this trend – in perforated grid patterns. In the course of this phenomenon of forms becoming round, more and more arabesque-like patterns emerge with floral and folkloristic elements.

Surfaces showing Character

The craftsmanship approach to processing materials has been forced this year. Textured fabrics and surfaces of strong character, which are enjoyable to touch and look at, define the area of materials. Fabrics for upholstery are patterned in themselves or in three-dimensional form. Leather comes embossed with crocodile pattern, with arabesque ornamentation or with perforation. Leather also acquires an interesting haptic and visual quality when furrowed like cloth or when processed in a way to make it look as if ribbed. Such refinements are used to emphasise high-quality value and craftsmanship and, thus, follow a trend from the automotive industry.

Other interesting material combinations can be observed for instance in the chair line by Philippe Starck for Kartell: These chairs merge plastics and acrylic glass into one product. Indeed, plastics are among the most favoured materials, which is presenting itself in high gloss. As for metals, chrome and aluminium continue to set the tone.
