19/05 2005:
Exhibition on the Work of Frei Otto
“Build light, design naturally”; under this title, Munich’s Architecture Museum in the Pinakothek der Moderne is presenting a comprehensive exhibition from May 26th to August 28th on the work of the architect, Frei Otto.
In the second half of the 20th Century, no other German architect was greeted with greater international recognition than Frei Otto, whose main works include the German Pavilion for the Montreal World’s Fair in 1967 and the mobile roof of the Stiftsruine (Church Ruins) in Bad Hersfeld of 1968, among many others.
He was already a cause of initial excitement in 1954 with his dissertation, “The Hanging Roof”, and since that time he has continued to be a source of important impulses and initiatives. His call in 1977 of, “Stop building the way you build...” is more topical than ever today.
In the field of lightweight construction, he has conducted research his whole life, developing the method scientifically and searching for opportunities to build roofs and building shells with little material and energy expenditure. Frei Otto is a pioneer in the areas of the ecology, environmental compatibility and resource research; themes that are on everyone’s tongues today.
With this comprehensive exhibition, Munich’s Architekturmuseum der TU honors the lifelong achievements of this great architect.
