Modern living trends autumn 2005

With new products, manufacturers are now ringing in the autumn and winter season in the field of interior design and tableware. It becomes increasingly important to distinguish oneself from the competition with the help of good design, because not only have the customers’ demands grown, but manufacturers also face great challenges with regards to increasing manufacturing costs, price wars, and declining trade margins. With good design and quality arguments better distinctions can be achieved in the long term than with cheap mass products – more and more manufacturers are realising this and take advantage of design as a success factor.

On the following pages, red dot exclusively introduces you to the relevant developments, news and tendencies in the fields of interior design and tableware. Three trends are dominant this autumn:

Inspired by nature
Bionics, the systematic observation and analysis of nature’s problem solving with regards to human technology and materials, has become part of the zeitgeist and is even rated as a good investment opportunity into the future at the stock market. This development has also seen themes of nature return to the field of interior design. Nature becomes a model for interior furnishing objects and the contrast of ‘naturalness’ and ‘artificiality’ remains a current theme. You can find examples in our trend gallery:

Back to the past
A second, obvious development is the return to proven concepts. The retro trend has become an economic factor by now. Products that tell a story and have a history sell well. The trend towards products that have already been on the market also pays when it comes to production costs. When an old brand is revived, the company saves enormous advertising costs at the (re-)launch. Thus, classics are revivified and past decades experience a revival. Visit out trend gallery:

Matchmaking
The third tendency already became apparent last year: With co-operations between companies from different trades, manufacturers hope to develop a larger target group and new markets. This year, the emphasis is on gift packaging which appeals to the customers’ emotions, thus inducing them to buy. Examples can be viewed here in our trend gallery:
