Designers go back to nature as a model

The field of bionics, which uses biological structures as models and inspiration for solving technical problems, has become an innovation tool over the last years. From this development and the increasing need for a life in harmony with nature the tendency to use nature as a model for furnishing objects has developed. Thus, the contrast of “naturalness” and “artificiality” remains a current theme.

This trend is dominated by organic forms which are often harmoniously combined with geometrical patterns, such as drop shaped vases with a vertical concave cut. The current materials are also clearly inspired by nature. Vessels with archaic wave cut call to mind barks of exotic wood; surfaces are satin finished; irregular furrows are contrasted with smooth glass parts; and bottles receive a sandy feel through their fine-grain surface.

The current colours are also inspired by nature: Smoke and amber colours, shades of brown, and above all lush green hues. The new green hues are combined with the complementary amethyst-purple.

New colours and décors as well as natural prints are intelligent means of creating a cost-effective variety of products and advancing innovation without having to invest into the development of completely new products.
