Nominees for the red dot: junior prize
In order to keep the audience on tenterhooks up to the very last minute, the winners of the two honorary awards of the red dot award: communication design will be announced at the end of the ceremony on 23 November 2005. The jury has agreed on three nominees for the “red dot: junior prize”, which is reserved for the best student entry.
“Im Takt”, Michaela Burger
“Im Takt” is the name of an extensive work that consists of nine books and which presents the central subject, rhythm visually as well as acoustically in its entire complexity. This work is supposed to create a better understanding of the abstract concept of “rhythm”, create a visual representation of the thought construct in all its intricacy and make its aesthetics tangible. The individual books show different interpretations of the concept of “rhythm” in an inseparable connection with music and architecture, design and composition.
“Im Takt” (“In the Rhythm”) is a dissertation by Michaela Burger of the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, faculty of Design. Michaela Burger was born in 1978 in Müllheim, Baden Württemberg, and is now living in Düsseldorf. During her years of study she attended several internships and worked as a freelancer. She won numerous national and international prizes. Beside this year`s nomination for the red dot award: junior prize she received the red dot twice before.
“Wetterküche”, Marc Karpstein and Bernhard Staiber
“Weather kitchen” is an interactive application aimed at explaining weather as a phenomenon. It offers an experimental environment in which meteorological parameters and their interaction become understandable. Due to the animated presentation the dynamics of weather are shown in a way in which they cannot be made visible with common static forms of presentation.
The users can create weather phenomena themselves, which are explained with the help of interactive models. Thus, the complexity of weather formation processes becomes understandable also for laymen.
“Weather kitchen” is a diploma thesis by Marc Karpstein and Bernhard Staiber from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Schwäbisch Gmünd in the subject ‘Information and Media’.
Bernhard Staiber, born in 1975 in Mutlangen, started his business studies at the Berufsakademie in Heidenheim after his examination in 1994. As a master of business administration he worked two years for the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg before he started his studies in the year 2000 at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Schwäbisch Gmünd. After gaining experience in Rio de Janeiro, Bernhard Staiber received his diploma in design in 2004. Since February 2005 he is working for healthpro GmbH in Düsseldorf.
Marc Karpstein was born in 1977 in Memmingen and began his studies of Information and Media at the Fachhochschule Schwäbisch Gmünd in the year 2000. After several internships in Amsterdam he received his diploma for his work “Wetterküche” in the year 2004 and is since working as a junior designer for Studio Laucke in Amsterdam.
“frau wow – eine bildhafte dokumentation“, Katja Schwalenberg
In 21 chapters, the manifold facets of being a woman are literally drawn in different ways. Each chapter makes use of a different graphic language of forms, from portraits through pencil drawing to wax crayon drawing. The 372 pages do not require any explanatory text. “frau wow” (“Ms Wow”) does not read between the lines, but gets its effect from the use of lines, colours and printing ink. These pictorial documentations, which exclusively depict topics, interests and characteristics of women, were inspired by well-known guidebooks and women’s magazines.
”frau wow” (“Ms Wow”) was designed by Katja Schwalenberg, a young designer from Saxony.
Born in 1975 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Katja Schwalenberg began her education as a bibliopegist after her examination in 1994. A study at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig followed. She received her diploma for illustration in the year 2001 and finished a following masterclass in 2003. Katja Schwalenberg is living in Leipzig and works as a freelancing illustrator and graphic designer. Since 2004 she is also working as an assistant for illustration at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig.
