A night of design
red dot award: product design – award ceremony 2005
More than 1,200 international guests from the fields of politics, industry and culture celebrated the award winners of this year’s red dot award: product design in Essen on 4 July 2005.
The event was festively opened with the vernissage of the two special exhibitions ‘Design on stage: winners red dot award: product design 2005’ and ‘adidas design – the complexity of simplicity’ in the red dot museum in the Zeche Zollverein colliery.
The Essen Opera House was the stylish venue of the actual award ceremony. The highlight of the night was the presentation of the ‘red dot: design team of the year’ award, which went to the adidas design team. Chief designer Michael Michalsky received the sought-after trophy, the ‘Radius’ touring cup. ‘Michael Michalsky and his design team have done excellent work in the past years’, thus Professor Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award, explained the selection of the adidas team as the design team of the year. “Today, adidas follows a universal design strategy, which runs consistently through all departments of the company. Under the management of Michalsky, the company successfully managed the balancing act between the return to its roots and the demands of a modern, young target group; between sports and lifestyle, fashion and high-tech”, said Zec. The ‘Radius’, on which all previous years’ winners are engraved, was presented by Kiyoyuki Okuyama of the Pininfarina design team, the winner of the previous year.
After the award ceremony, the award-winners were celebrated into the early hours at the ‘Designer’s Night’ in the red dot design museum.
