Colours, Forms, Materials 2006

Colour preferences of recent years are partly carried forward, partly they are superseded by trends gaining in strength. In this respect, red as a colour, interpreted particularly design-affine and outstanding due to its signalling effect, is of particularly high significance in the furniture branch.

A second colour trend emerging in 2006 is the use of the “non-colours” black and white as “reincarnation” of the 1980s.

A third colour trend, albeit considerably more in the background compared to the other two trends, is the use of natural hues covering the entire spectrum from gradated white all the way to dark brown.

Round shapes on the advance
In 2006, round and baroque shapes will strongly win recognition, compared to the extremely angular and crystalline shapes of the previous year. The circle is dominating the visual language of many pieces of furniture. At the forefront this year are rounded corners reducing formal strictness of furniture objects.

Drapery picks up baroque elements
The tendency to increasingly present drapery with partially eye-catching patterns results from the ever-increasing creative freedom due to enhanced print technologies in the textile industry. Meanwhile, baroque ornamental patterns can also be applied to cover- and upholstery fabric without the usual mechanical effort.

Structured surfaces dominate the materials
Structure-like surfaces play a major role, just as they did in the previous year. Fabrics of such a refined and sophisticated nature create both haptical and optical effects. Elaborately worked leather, often with crocodile leather print, emphasizes the exclusivity of the furniture object. The combination of leather in different finish versions results in products optically rich in contrast. Smooth shiny surfaces correspond with clear high-contrast colour combinations of black, white, and red.

Wood remains dark and expressive
The tendency towards dark, expressive tropical wood like Rosewood, Zebrano, and Macassar began to emerge in the previous year and will continue throughout this year.
