Art Canada Stamp Series: Yousuf Karsh

red dot
red dot award: communication design 2008

The stamps celebrate the work of the Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh, who was born 100 years ago. His impressive portraits are presented in complex black and white. The photo of Winston Churchill from 1941, who at first insisted on posing with his cigar, appeared on the cover of Life magazine and is regarded as an embodiment of British wartime resolve. The stamps belong to the series entitled “Art Canada”. The background of the three stamp booklets was designed with a raster image and printed in lightly tinted varnish.
