President’s Design Award 2007

This year, the Singapore Ministry of Information, Communication and Art will for the third time award the President’s Design Award to national designers who have with their work contributed considerably to establishing the Singapore design industry on an international scale. Design expert and Icsid president Professor Dr. Peter Zec, who is the initiator of the red dot design award and has also been successful with the red dot Singapore since last year, was invited as chairman of the jury for product and industrial design.

The President’s Design Award is regarded as a symbol of recognition for outstanding national achievements in the fields of architecture and town planning, fashion design, industrial and product design, interior design, and visual communication.

After in recent years several designers from Singapore have received international design prizes and design institutions of the city such as for example red dot Traffic have begun to hold design competitions themselves, there is currently no national distinction which recognises the achievements of Singaporean designers and architects and honours those works which strengthen Singapore’s international reputation.

The President’s Design Award recognises the achievements of Singapore’s top designers and honours their contribution to the local economy. It is to serve as inspiration and motivation and offer an incentive for Singapore’s design industry. The President’s Design Award wants to make clear that following successful national examples can contribute to international success and that, above all, local designers and architects are indispensable for the national industry and economy.

The award ceremony will take place on 27 Nov 2007 and will be also the opening event of the Singapore Design Festival 2007. Sellapan Ram Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore will be guest of honour.
