25/02 2008:

red dot communication design yearbook 2007/2008 wins award

The red dot communication design yearbook 2007/2008, edited by the design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec, recently received the ”Award for Typographic Excellence” from the Type Directors Club in New York. This award recognises the typographical and photographical overall concept by the Berlin-based studio “Fons Hickmann m23”.

Every year, the red dot communication design yearbook itself documents the results of one of the most important and largest design competitions worldwide, the red dot design award, in the field of communication design. Therefore it was even more gratifying for the editor Professor Dr. Peter Zec that his own product met the high standards of the design scene. Zec: “We are delighted about this recognition of our achievement – I personally, as the editor but also we as the red dot edition publishing company, which publishes the yearbook. However, we would like to particularly thank our designer Fons Hickmann and his team who have done an amazing job, something we have come to appreciate not only because of this award.”

In the development of the yearbook design Hickmann had to achieve a fine balance between on the one hand giving the book an image of its own and on the other hand meeting the functional requirement of the yearbook to combine different award-winning design works between its covers without directly competing with them. He has accomplished this in an outstanding way, as the award from the Type Directors Club confirms.

The winners of the 54th “Award for Typographic Excellence” will be published in the yearbook “Typography 29, the Annual of the Type Directors Club”, designed by Philippe Apeloig and edited by HarperCollins in New York. The yearbook will be available at the end of the year.

The opening of the 54th TDC exhibition will take place in New York City in summer 2008. Following this, the winning works will be presented to an international audience in a touring exhibition visiting all five continents.
