Professor Dr. Zec as design expert in Dubai

Under the motto “The Future of Design“ prestigious design experts from all over the world met for the Professional Interior Design Conference in Dubai on 7th May 2008 to discuss the future of design and the design profession itself. The conference was conducted by APID – The Association of Professional Interior Designers. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award and senator of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid), was invited as the main speaker to give a keynote speech.

In an age in which trends are developing faster and faster and are replaced by new trends even quicker, design in general, and interior design in particular, faces completely new challenges. Global climatic changes, new legislation, technological advances, changing population numbers and economic conditions are all factors which will affect future interior design and bring about completely new challenges for designers.

In his “The Future of Design” speech, Zec commented on the future of design and spoke about the future role of design and creativity as drivers of innovation. To strengthen the role of design as an economic factor in the Arab world and to actively promote Arabic designers, are of great important to Zec: “Dubai is still a young city, a virtually blank canvas. That provides incredible potential: A lot is happening a lot more quickly than in old cultural nations because factors like protection of monuments, structures evolved over many centuries and the like, do not have to be taken into consideration. On the other hand, this also brings about the risk of certain arbitrariness.  Now, thought must be given to what one actually wants, what visions one has for the region and what picture one wants to convey of it. In the long run, it is a matter of developing one’s own design and architectural language.”

Last year, Zec participated in the first International Design Forum as design and industry expert, during which red dot, as the official partner of the IDF, was present on-site with an exhibition of award-winning products.
