Cultural spirit – design and the culture of communication They embodied a cultural phenomenon because they presented music in an entirely new way. Large-scale music videos, such as those produced by Depeche Mode and David Bowie in the early 1980s, marked the beginning of a new multimediality. Since then, the way people listen to music and use audio-visual media has changed radically, and today almost anyone can easily publish their own music videos and tracks, or download their favourite videos onto their mobile phones. Against this background, the Domino multimedia phone offers a very interesting approach: its design interprets the product type of a phone as a “music feature phone project”, thus turning the phone into a kind of platform with an array of different media capabilities. The Domino is a multimedia phone for music, video and video conferencing via the mobile broadband network and was created with a young and music-loving target group in mind. With its sophisticated functionality it aims at helping young people cultivate their taste in music and style via their mobile phone. The Domino features a sleek design and a display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The asymmetric yet well-balanced design sits lightly and comfortably in the hand; its language of form is defined by the high-quality aluminium enclosure, as well as the front-panel touch-scroll wheel. The controller reacts to the slightest touch and features a clear arrangement that allows users to navigate quickly and easily. The design and functionality of the Domino thus represent a new interpretation of a product type – music and video on a phone becomes an exciting experience.
