Dances with eggs Its name has become the symbol of an entire product genre. The Sony Walkman revolutionised the appreciation of music at the end of the 1970s by offering an unprecedented novel experience, allowing its users to enjoy music anywhere and at any time. The latest product developed by Sony in this tradition is the “Rolly” SEP-10BT Sound Entertainment Player, a kind of egg-shaped audio device that follows an entirely new approach to entertainment through music. The egg boasts innovative audio technology on its inside with excellent sound quality, as well as rotating wheels, light rings and rotating loudspeakers that open and close by simply turning them horizontally out of the egg. The careful and seamless incorporation of these components into the shape of an egg has thus made an attractive audio device that is easy and intuitive to handle. Using this music player conveys a sense of playfulness achieved through the very enticing way in which the Rolly plays with light and controls the LED-light elements. Ring-shaped lights are embedded into the speaker units and its direct light is reflected off mirrors – the reflected light thus seems to be emanating out from the centre of the egg. Moreover, the design uses full-colour LEDs and enables the colours to be allocated to the different types of operation by the user, thus assigning individual meaning to the colours. With these soft blinking lights, the Rolly almost seems to be alive, trying to communicate and dance with its user – dances with eggs.
