This novel MRI scanner is based on an innovative magnet and new magnesium diboride superconductive cable. These technologies make it possible to adopt a U-shaped configuration, designed to avoid claustrophobic reactions in patients – common in traditional configurations – by providing ample space above the patient’s head and body. This configuration also makes it possible to scan patients in weight-bearing positions, such as standing or sitting. The new technologies have also resulted in a significant cost reduction compared with other open systems.
