Like a second skin The human hand is a marvel of engineering in terms of the coordination of muscles, sinews, joint and 27 bones. In the course of time the hand has evolved into a highly effective musculoskeletal system and ideal tool for work. Many researchers in evolution assume that the development of the hand’s complex structure is directly connected to that of the early human brain. Like all complex systems, however, the hand’s structure is also very fragile. For better protection of the hand, the Tegera Pro 9195 protective gloves have been developed with an integrated wrist support – both the hand and the wrist are spared while working. The integrated support is not rigid, however; rather it naturally stabilises the wrist without hindering the work activity. Ergonomic studies conducted prior to the design implied that the angle of the wrist is crucial for how long work can be maintained. Adjusted accordingly, the wrist support reduces both overall strain and the risk of long-term disorders. The seams of the glove are placed on the thumb, forefinger and ulnar side of the palm so as not to disturb the grip and tactile feeling, and the fingers are gently flexed to avoid excessive accumulation of material on the palm side of the hand while working. The glove’s tactile transparency is another key aspect: it gives comfort to the hand and fingertips and yet almost feels “like a second skin,” giving the user high sensitivity of touch, which is crucial for safe work. The form language of these protective gloves is highly distinctive and supports exactly those parts of the hand that are exposed most to strain while working. Its pointedly designed product graphics lend it the appeal of sports gloves – the work glove thus has been given a new interpretation, an interpretation that also serves to enrich the aesthetics of daily work.
