A scout on the wrist Pure scout instinct alone is not enough for moving off the grid in the wilderness, and finding one’s way by using a generic compass and altimeter alone always poses a great challenge. It is far easier for outdoor enthusiasts to depend on consistently well-designed sports precision instruments. The Finn Tuomas Vohlonen was one of those pioneers who wandered the wildernesses, and when, in 1936, he founded his company Suunto, his idea was above all to create easy-to-read and dependable instruments for outdoor activities. The Suunto Core is the latest model from a long line of successful precision instruments and aims to translate the vision and experience of the past into a contemporary language of form. Its clear design unites the functions of an altimeter, a barometer, a compass, as well as timing and logging functions with the appearance of a wrist watch that is elegant and sporting at the same time. Its carefully designed details and the arched shape of its casing, which reduces perspiration at the wrist, make this sports watch a helpful companion. It also offers intelligent functions, such as displaying the exact sunrise and sunset times for any selected areas. In addition, the wearer can choose among four different languages for the display: English, Spanish, French and German. All the display functions of the Suunto Core follow a logical and consistent layout and they can be easily operated via a menu-based user interface – a sports instrument which combines the appearance of an aesthetic wristwatch with the manifold features of a wrist computer.
