Dimensions of innovation The carpet is a true cultural asset, one whose design and appearance has changed and been adapted many times. Originating more than a thousand years ago – and still in use today – as a piece of furniture woven from wool by nomads, the carpet could be rolled up quickly and transported by camel, then unrolled again at a new camp. Today, the carpet has become a permanent fixture in living spaces and offices. Having to withstand strong tread wear in particular, today’s floor coverings are highly durable with improved qualities due to new weaving technologies and approaches. The design of the Perlon Rips Twin gives this floor carpet for commercial use a new and interesting appearance by combining the tradition of weaving with an innovative construction method and material choice. This produces an interesting dialogue between hard and soft, glossy and matt, absorbing and reflecting. The resultant harmonious, artistic interplay of contrasts takes the viewer by surprise. The floor carpet structure looks as if it consists of several layers. This appearance is achieved in manufacturing by letting the pattern of the stiff, high-gloss “non-textile” material define and show through in the actual weaving process so that it creates a clearly visible “third dimension” on the surface. To both the eye and the touch, this durable floor covering is highly sensual and showcases an interesting technical approach – defining new dimensions of innovation.
