25/11 2009:
A Fireworks of Creativity – Singapore Celebrates red dot Winners
The award ceremony on 24 November 2009 in Singapore was the festive culmination of this year’s red dot award: design concept. In the impressive atmosphere of the red dot design museum Singapore’s creative scene celebrated the proud winners with a spectacular awards presentation in the presence of more than 400 international guests from the design industry. One of the evening’s highlights was the spectacular performance of the sound artist and music composer sonicbrat.
This year’s red dot award: design concept received 2,733 entries from 56 countries - a tremendous success as the competition thus managed to increase its number of entries by almost 50 per cent this year. The high-class jury consisting of international design experts did not face an easy task selecting the best concepts given the entries’ high quality standard. Finally, 208 design concepts were selected for the red dot award for outstanding design quality. Another 16 received the distinction red dot: best of the best for highest design quality. These winners were automatically nominated for the competition’s ultimate award - the red dot: luminary which comes with a 5,000 USD prize money.
For the ceremony, Pico Art International, the official event manager, transformed the red dot design museum’s main gallery into a runway stage for presenting the winners who came from all over the world to the award ceremony in Singapore and received their trophies from Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, President red dot and initiator of the red dot design award and Ken Koo, the President of red dot Asia.
And the red dot: luminary goes to… This year, the SIRIUS Breast Cancer Scanner from Design Exchange and Resource Medical won the jury’s vote. “The impact of this concept does indeed surpass all the others on a multitude of levels both directly and indirectly. The SIRIUS Breast Cancer Scanner went beyond all the other wonderful concepts by solving a multitude of very complex physical and intangible problems in a sensible, professional and simple way – while being sensitive to myriad complex human needs – it deserves the red dot: luminary,” said Mr. Gordon Bruce, jury member of 2009 of this year’s red dot: luminary.
Experimental exploration into sound art One of the evening’s highlights was without a doubt the spectacular performance of the sound artist and music composer sonicbrat. Using the sampling of live objects, live music and sound art, sonicbrat painted three distinct sonic pieces, minimalist "visual audiographies", which created the backdrop, setting the mood for the night. This experimental exploration, researching and gathering, experimenting with live instruments, to create a blend of sound into art is a perfect metaphor for what the award stands for.
Following the awards presentation, Ken Koo and Professor Dr. Peter Zec unveiled the red dot award: design concept yearbook 2009/2010, which documents the most outstanding trends and innovations of the competition. They also opened the special exhibition of the red dot award: design concept, which will be on display for one year in the red dot design museum.
The finale of the evening was a spectacular party in the red dot design museum lasting until the early morning hours. red dot Bombay Sapphire cocktails as well as the new Bombay Sapphire Collins, among other drinks, were served throughout the night and many guests seized the chance to exchange views with international design experts, to develop contacts or or just to celebrate their distinction in a great party atmosphere.
