The “Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting” is an ancient Chinese painting book first published in 1679 and reprinted many times ever since. It introduces the art of Chinese ink painting, compiling numerous techniques and patterns that serve as guide for drawing and painting, and today is still an indispensable reference book for artists and students alike. Its title goes back to the Chinese writer Li Yu, whose mansion with book store and printing shop was known as the Mustard Seed Garden, and it is the place where the work was published in its original form. The design of the two posters, which aim to promote the World Games 2009 that will take place in the Taiwanese town of Kaohsiung, not only refers to the concept and style of this historic painting book; indeed it is directly inspired by traditional Chinese ink painting techniques, which are marked by a characteristically timeless style and, above all, are a means of expressing moods and atmospheres. In combination with geometric elements, which symbolise sport’s equipment, the design merges the sportsmanship of the orient with the spirit of modern sports, and through the strong contrast between the oriental classics and the contemporary language of form produces a special imagery that attracts attention.
