“it is only the accurate element, the strict method that creates openness, allows creativity, makes imagination possible.” This one sentence from Otl Aicher’s book “the world as design” suffices to illustrate both his design principles and his mindset. The typographer and graphic designer, whose influence is unmistakable to this very day, welcomed rigorous rules necessary as a prerequisite for free play. With a keen aesthetic sense for and passionate dedication to honest design he contributed to the renewal of today’s visual communication.
The corporate design of the communication media for the Munich-based exhibition spaces Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Kunstbau and Kubus/Petuelpark, too, showcase a strict, purist appearance, an appearance that is marked by clarity and tranquillity resulting from the sparing use of text and images. The generous white space thus created, brings both text and images even more distinctively to the fore and simultaneously leaves plenty of space for dialogue. The sans serif font, all set in uppercase and strictly right-justified, follows the shape of the motives to create a variety of layouts. The appearance of the posters, brochures and invitation cards thus presents itself as a merging of rigour and lightness.
