The enormous diversity of magazines and graphical publications imposes a duty on designers to come up with ever new ideas to set themselves apart from the competition. However, today, the demand to question time-tested guidelines and break established rules is no longer a novelty; it is rather one version of the captious and paradoxical call for spontaneity. Thus the appeal to create something new, be individual and different, often is a disguise for the trap of conformity – to be individual is what everybody aspires to.The Stijlroyal magazine manages not to fall into this trap by not purporting to be markedly different, but instead simply presents itself as what it is: a magazine that aims to provide reader edification, that merges everyday topics in an intelligent and humorous way with issues of the time, and which conveys a charming sense of home country culture and links, paired with the sophistication of nonchalant savoir vivre. The design of the magazine does without superfluous decoration and, as visual design elements, instead allows the clear and distinctive typography as well as photographs (either full-page or cropped) to come to the fore. Content and form thus merge into an aesthetically appealing unity in which a broad range of topics is presented in a surprising and playful manner.
