The international yearbook communication design 2009/2010
Source of inspiration, trend barometer and presentation of the best and most creative works of communication design – the international yearbook communication design has long established itself as a standard work and a must have for every creative professional. In time for the awards presentation on 9 December 2009, the current edition of the international yearbook, the international yearbook communication design 2009/2010, will be published by red dot edition.
The yearbook introduces the winners of the red dot award: communication design, one of the most important design competitions worldwide, and provides fascinating insights into areas such as advertising, corporate design, packaging design, virtual design and sound design. Furthermore, it offers a well-founded overview of the latest developments in the industry. The yearbook again comes with a DVD, providing all winning digital works with a suitable presentation platform.
Every year anew, the international yearbook communication design inspires readers with its extraordinary overarching typographic concept and has thus long since become a sought-after collector’s item. The international yearbook communication design 2009/2010 has again been designed by the Berlin-based design firm “Fons Hickmann m23”, who managed to come up with a typographic masterpiece once more. red dot talked to founder Professor Fons Hickmann in an interview:
red dot: Could you explain the concept of the international yearbook communication design 2009/2010 in a few sentences to the readers of our news? What makes it special?
Fons Hickmann: The last three editions of the yearbook have already shown that the decision to bank on typography for the overall design concept has been very successful. The books are not only collector’s items, but are design objects themselves. This became clear when the book received the »Award for Typographic Excellence« from the Type Directors Club of New York. If one design competition presents another design competition – and thus a competitor – with an award, then this is definitely a reason to celebrate.
red dot: Apart from your office, what is your favourite place to work on your projects?
Fons Hickmann: I work a lot while travelling; on trains and planes. I can concentrate well with the travelling noise in the background. Working on a plane at night is almost like meditating; you are not interrupted, you are hovering in a metaphorical sense.
red dot: What advice would you give young designers?
Fons Hickmann: I don’t really like being the wise uncle or oracle. But okay: Dear newcomers, please check out what designers before you have created and don’t just focus on what is currently being twittered, facebooked or blogged. The world is older than “what are you doing right now?”. There is a lot to discover – if you search for it.
