Basel and the value of design
After last year’s splendid premiere the showcase of the “red dot award: communication design” is now again making a stopover in Basel. Until 27 April 2011 red dot will be showing the exhibition “Design Value – Design Values. red dot presents awarded communication design 2010/2011” in The Basel School of Design on the Lyss. As the title of the exhibition already indicates, an overview of works awarded in the “red dot award: communication design 2010” is on display. A special focus lies on the value of design. Not only the vernissage on 4 April 2011 was entirely dedicated to this topic, but also the design congress taking place at the Congress Center Basel for the first time was devoted to this theme.
The series of lectures represented the first highlight of the opening day. A multitude of design aficionados listened to the enthralling presentations of Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award, Jochen Rädeker, Managing Partner of Strichpunkt, Shan Preddy, author of the book “How to lead a Design Agency”, of Design Manager Tobias Glaser and Knut Maierhofer, Co-partner KMS TEAM. A panel discussion in which representatives from economy and politics debated about design value concluded the congress.
Due to the expected great visitor afflux, the opening ceremony took place in the Congress Center Basel. Once again more than 500 guests had registered for the festive vernissage on 4 April 2011. After the introductory address of Jean Jacques Schaffner, designer, red dot partner and co-organizer of the exhibition, the next orator was Regierungsrat (member of the cantonal government) Christoph Brutschin. Thereafter Professor Dr. Peter Zec and René Kamm, CEO of Messe Basel (Basel fair), welcomed the guests. Topping it all off was the final speech by Michel de Boer, Studio Dumbar. The drum artists “stickStoff” provided for musical entertainment. After the ending of the ceremonious part the vernissage guests were shuttled to the exhibition space with especially chartered trams.
The visitors flocked in droves into the exhibition so that the rooms of the School of Design were brimming in the blink of an eye. Even this year the guests are offered a potpourri of all areas of communication design – and that on an international basis: from poster design and editorial via web design and advertising to corporate and packaging design the very best works of contemporary design are exhibited here. The international jury of the “red dot award: communication design 2010” assessed a total of 6,369 entries. The current “red dot: design agency of the year”, BBDO, is represented with a selection of its outstanding and awarded works as well.
In the year 2010 the honorary „red dot: client of the year” award was bestowed for the first time and it went to the automobile manufacturer Audi. Hence Audi’s awards have received a special presentation space in the context of the exhibition. Because of the particular exhibition site, the creative habitat Basel, another focus lies on Swiss works which are presented collectively in one room. Those works and the other exhibits can still be admired until 27 April 2011.
In addition, some of the works are also on display in the foyer of the auditorium of The Basel School of Design, Vogelsangstrasse 15, so that the designers of tomorrow can easily gain insights into today’s design trends.
Daily from noon to 7 pm, Mondays closed. The exhibition will be open during the Easter holidays.
