About the “red dot design award”

With the red dot design award the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has created one of the largest and internationally most prestigious design competitions. In 2010 alone, the competition, the origins of which date back to 1955, recorded almost 14,000 entries from 70 countries and is thus one of the leading and biggest design competitions worldwide. The competition is divided into three disciplines, which are held and judged separately: the red dot award: product design, the red dot award: communication design, and the red dot award: design concept, which has been organised annually by the red dot branch office in Singapore since 2005. Its award, the “red dot”, is one of the most prestigious quality seals for good design and as such highly regarded in the industry. According to the results of a recent study it has reached a superior position compared to all other design competitions.

The red dot is awarded to products and works that are characterised by outstanding design quality. The reputation and worldwide recognition of the competition are guaranteed by the excellent work of the international jury. Noted designers and design experts from all around the world are invited to independently decide which of the numerous products receive a red dot. The composition of the jury changes every year, thus guaranteeing a high degree of objectivity and fairness. The submitted products are judged according to different criteria such as innovation, function, formal quality, ergonomics, symbolic and emotional content as well as clarity of function.

The home of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and the red dot organisation is the boiler house of the ‘Zeche Zollverein’ colliery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The boiler house itself was redesigned by British star architect Lord Norman Foster. Every year approximately 250,000 people interested in design from all over the world visit the imposing exhibition premises of the red dot design museum. Besides the permanent exhibition of approximately 1,500 award-winning products and different special exhibitions on design, the red dot again and again goes on tour around the whole world: this year all works that have won an accolade in the red dot award: communication design 2009 will for the first time be on display in Basel as part of the “red dot on tour” programme.
