The gala of international design

Even in the times of the old “Design Innovations” competition, and certainly now with the red dot award: product design, the award ceremony was and is now even more an annual highlight for the design scene. This vibrant homage to design has also grown in the course of the years. In 1991, the award ceremony was merely an adjunct to the exhibition opening, but as early as 1992, the presentation of awards was celebrated separately at the Orangerie in Essen’s Gruga Park.

Since 1994, the glittering award ceremony has taken place in the Aalto Theatre, Essen’s opera house. In the meantime it has become an event almost unmatched in the international design scene. The best of the best are invited on stage to receive their certificates.

Ballet and inspiring music in the opera house round off the programme at the gala festivities. Sold out for many years in succession and attended by visitors from across the globe, the presentation of the red dot award: product design is an attraction each summer for international designers and entrepreneurs from large and medium sized businesses, and also for well-known personalities from politics, sport, culture and entertainment.
