Simply the best – the nominated products for the red dot: grand prix
This week: Beautiful new worlds – digital games
It’s been a long time since the prospects for communication designers and advertising agencies have been as bright as today. All the analysts and market research firms are reporting an economic growth that also boosts the communication design sector. In particular those creative minds will benefit from this positive trend, which have stressed quality and courage in the past months. They have seized the opportunity to distinguish themselves from competitors by powerful ideas. In the coming weeks we would like to present you some of these designers and agencies. Among more than 6,000 works submitted for the red dot award: communication design 2010, their creations stood out so distinctly that the jury nominated them for a red dot: grand prix. This is the top individual award of the competition, and it is only awarded to a maximum of one entry in each category. Until the award ceremony, on 8 December 2010, the excitement will continue – the winners of the red dot: grand prix will not be announced until they are onstage. In the meantime, you may form your own opinion about the works. Every week, we will present you the nominated products of a new category.
So far, we have shown you the nominated works of the categories “Advertising”, “Packaging Design”, “Magazines & Daily Press” and “Posters” at this place. Now, here are the best of the category “Digital Games”:
“The Settlers 7”, Ubisoft GmbH
Sixteen years have passed since the first PC game of “The Settlers” series was brought on the market, which was so convincing with its unique game principle, its “bustling factor” and its great love of detail. This year, the Ubisoft company published “The Settlers 7”. Beside some improvements and expansions of the game principle, the latest version of The Settlers is primarily convincing with its new graphic engine: Rays of sunlight falling through the foliage, wind whipping across plains, spark-emitting streams of lava, and castles, taverns, monasteries or small cottages designed down to the last detail – the lovingly and fabulously manufactured design permits the players to dive deeply into the mediaeval world of this game and explore the sublime beauty of their realm to the most remote corners. For the first time, the animation technology of the movie industry is used for the game intro. A wonderful, extensive, and varied strategy game, which also convinced the jury of the red dot award: communication design, who nominated “The Settler 7” for a red dot: grand prix.
“The Whispered World”, Daedalic Entertainment GmbH
“The Whispered World” recounts the story of the young and melancholic clown called Sadwick, who, together with his companion Spot, embarks on a journey through an imaginary world in order to save the world from its ruin. The game is based on the diploma thesis of Marco Huellen, a graphic designer and illustrator, who describes his motivation for this work as follows: “Nowadays, when virtual shooters are characteristic of the computer world, I want to go back to the roots of the genre. The young players of action games don’t know any adventures; and many older fans are longing for these old games in which action and intelligence were more important than stupid finger acrobatics. This caused a market gap already identified by several companies. My game is intended to fill this gap.” The result: A classic 2D adventure with “point & click” control. Here, the players can experience an interactive and exciting story and explore various fabulous scenarios. “The Whispered World” is entirely based on lovingly handcrafted 2D graphics. At first, each picture is quite traditionally created on a light table. The game therefore offers a variety of carefully hand painted scenarios, and detailed 2D figure and background animations, an orchestral soundtrack as well as animated cutscenes in the tradition of Japanese animes. A game that itself is a winner: The jury of the red dot award: communication design has already awarded it the red dot: best of the best. Thus, “The Whispered World” is also nominated for a red dot: grand prix in the category “Digital Games”.
Nanosuit 2, Crytek GmbH
Even ego shooters require the proper equipment: In the game “Crysis 2” the world is brought to wrack and ruin. A super soldier has to preserve humanity from its end. For this purpose, he has to pave his way through the urban jungle of New York. He is equipped with the war technology of the future: the nanosuit 2 around which the story revolves. This nanosuit 2, which is technically improved as compared to Crysis 1, is the distinguishing feature of Crysis 2. The designers on the nanosuit: “It was our key requirement for the design to modernise features and give them a significant industrial look. In comparison with the first version, the body dimensions of the nanosuit 2 are significantly larger. Its surfaces seem to be much more outlined. Features like connection and intersection points have been designed much more in detail. They appear to be very functional.” – Technical style meets an accentuated body character. Instead of conflicting with each other, they merge seamlessly and complement each other perfectly. The jury was quite impressed by the strength and elegance of the nanosuit 2. It nominated the work for the red dot: grand prix.
By now, we would like to cordially invite you to save the date for the evening of the award ceremony on 8 December 2010 and to be present when the announcement is made: “And the winner is…!” Join the party and secure your ticket now!
