Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015

In search of good design and innovations

Since the beginning of November the registration phase for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 has been running. The competition, which origins date back to 1954, is one of the world’s largest and most distinguished design competitions. Manufacturers and designers from more than 75 countries take part. Chosen by an independent and renowned jury, the award increases the visibility of designers and companies, brands and products. The use of the Red Dot label is exclusively reserved for the winners of the competition.

Expert tour by Prof. Dr. Peter Zec

On 16 December 2014 at 6.30 p.m., Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, will guide design enthusiasts through the exhibition true to the motto “Icons of Brand Design”. The tour (in German language) is free of charge and takes place in the course of the exhibition “Best Communication Design - Red Dot Winners Selection 2014”.

Exhibition: Light & Shape

Best of Belgian Design

From 28 October 2014 until 25 January 2015, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany presents the special exhibition “Light & Shape: Best of Belgian Design”. From ultra-light luggage collection to unusual lamps: the exemplary selection of products from various living environments presents a cross-section of the current Belgian design standard. Touching and testing most of the exhibits is explicitly allowed, since outstanding design quality becomes apparent only in use.

Event: Every product tells a story

Good products do not appear from nowhere. In the beginning, there always is an idea which turns into the final product after a long development process and countless drafts. But where do these ideas come from and how do designers get their motivation? The exhibition “Every Product Tells a Story”, which can be visited from 28 November 2014 until 31 May 2015 in the Hong Kong Design Institute, explores this question in detail.

Taiwanese Design Faces

A special exhibition which focuses on the creative minds behind award-winning designs is presented in the Red Dot Design Museum Taipei from 13 November 2014 – 29 March 2015. “Taiwanese Design Faces” tells stories – about five Taiwanese designers. The presentation introduces the people who create innovative products, convince manufacturers to produce these, and who give advice and support during the whole development process, from the idea to the finished good.

The International Yearbook Communication Design 2014/2015

Every year, the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design are honoured and their works are published in an extensive reference book – for eternity. The two-volume International Yearbook Communication Design 2014/2015 is hot off the press and gives an overview of the status quo of current communication design.

It’s that time of year again - October 24th, the design industry will gather to celebrate the winners of the annual Red Dot Design Awards, honoring the best and brightest individuals and campaigns in international design. This year the ultimate prize for companies – “Red Dot: Client of the Year” – is awarded to PepsiCo for the corporation’s design ethos and output in 2014. PepsiCo garners nine awards total and marks the first time in Red Dot history that the “Red Dot: Client of the Year” designation will go to a non-automotive company.

The gaming industry has advanced to become the most prestigious entertainment disciplines. Contemporary 3D applications, photo-realistic surroundings and new developments such as the Oculus Rift glasses are unthinkable without the innovative energy of game makers. Communication and advertising professionals are increasingly becoming aware of the potential of video games, but the pixel world is virgin territory for many, even technically well-versed designers, PR consultants and marketing managers. On 23 October 2014, “Define Game Design”, a conference with high-profile industry specialists, will set out to shed light on the state of play and will present technical and economic opportunities.

7,096 projects entered, 569 Red Dot awards and 101 times Red Dot: Best of the Best – those are the milestones of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2014. On 24 October, this year’s winners will be honoured at the Red Dot Gala in front of an international audience. One agency in particular has a lot to celebrate this year: the Scholz & Friends Group receives the honorary title “Red Dot: Agency of the Year 2014”.

This year’s best design concepts and prototypes emerged from 29 categories with 4,791 entries from 63 countries. Comprising of 22 design experts worldwide, the international panel of distinguished jurors honoured and celebrated 304 concepts. Among the recipients is an institution entrant that has been selected for demonstrating the best use of digital visualisation and simulation techniques.
