“Making a Difference / A Difference in Making”

The Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany will present the exhibition “Making a Difference / A Difference in Making” from September 27 to October 30, 2016. The collection brings together pioneering 3D-printed works of art, design, engineering and science. The exhibition is curated by Marta Malé-Alemany, architect and recognized researcher in the field of digital fabrication technologies, and produced by Materialise, a 3D printing company based in Belgium.

CONVERGE 2016

A new form of conference

From 20 to 21 September, product designers, developers and innovators will come together at the CONVERGE 2016. For two days, big names of the industry will give lectures on the latest developments from the field of virtual design creations in the course of the new conference series initiated by the software company solidThinking. In the SANAA building Essen, Germany, participants can look forward to presentations of well known product developers.

Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016

Award-winning design, premium products and a touch of Hollywood in Essen: That was the Red Dot Gala 2016.

On 4 July 2016, the global design scene came to Essen, Germany, to celebrate the winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design. During the Red Dot Gala, which has been booked out for months, the laureates of the highest single distinction, the “Red Dot Best of the Best”, received their trophies on stage in the Aalto-Theater in Essen. Afterwards, 1,800 guests enjoyed an evening of dancing and networking at the Designers’ Night in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen – in the midst of award-winning innovations.

Three special exhibitions present latest product design

In July 2016, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany presents three special exhibitions at once at Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can experience the best products of the year in “Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016”, and can meet the creative video technology of the design team of the year in “Creative Video Revolution by Blackmagic Design”. Moreover, the exhibition “Formosa Forms – Contemporary Tradition in Taiwanese Design” informs about the current design understanding in Taiwan.

The largest special exhibition in area in the Red Dot Award’s history presents current prize-winning products in two locations at UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein: From lifestyle accessories to consumer electronics to household helpers: The Red Dot Design Museum displays the most extensive selection of international innovations, completed by further designs in the neighbouring Hall 8.


China Good Design 2016 – last opportunity to take part

China Good Design is taking place for the second time and now is the start of the crucial phase of the award. Participants have until 12 August to submit their latest products. The contest, organised by Red Dot in cooperation with the Xiamen Media Group, is open to all designers and companies who want to achieve success for their high-quality products in China. The aim is to make high-quality products manufactured by international companies visible to the Chinese market and recognise their quality.


Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 – jury session successfully completed

The jury session of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 has been a great success. For three days, the members of this year’s Red Dot jury evaluated the multiplicity of projects. The entries out of 21 main categories were judged by 26 specialists including design professionals from all around the world, journalists and industry experts. Some of them are already experienced Red Dot jurors, some of them are part of the panel for the first time. Red Dot always watches out for a balanced constellation in order to achieve a selection process as independent as possible.

Influential technology designer: Tönis Käo has died

It is not unusual for a designer to be less well known than the products he created. Tönis Käo was no exception. Born in 1940 in Saaremaa (Estonia), Käo chose Munich as his home. It was there that he came up with concepts whose realisation became possible decades later and which became extremely popular. He also designed products that everyone in Germany above the age of 40 is likely to be familiar with – even though the visionary designer himself did not become a household name until much later.
