A keen eye for good design - the jury of the red dot award: communication design
During the latecomers' phase designers, agencies or design offices still have the chance to register by 17 June and hand in their works for the renowned “red dot award: communication design 2011”, to face up to an independent, international jury of experts.
The careful choice of top-class jurors, whose line-up varies year by year, guarantees a high degree of objectivity and trustiness for the competition. Being experts in the various fields of communication design, all jurors have specialised knowledge and make sure that all of the 24 different categories will be evaluated and discussed critically.
Ulf Berlin – leading the way in digital design
Ulf Berlin from Sweden started his educational training at the Graphic Institute in Stockholm in 1992 and initially worked as freelance designer, later as design manager of Magazine Design. In 1998 he founded, together with André Hindersson, the Swedish brand and design agency "Silver" which developed from a small creative office to a reliable partner for Swedish as well as international clients within the past few years without losing its creative character. From the very beginning Silver belonged to the leading brand agencies in the field of digital design. Ulf Berlin is board member of the Swedish Design Association and has been regularly active as juror for the most important Swedish design competitions. He has also been honoured with a great number of awards for his works.
Rowland Heming – the expert for packaging design
For more than four decades now, Belgian Rowland Heming has been designing brands and packaging. He started his own Brussels-based design studio "Pineapple Design" in 1978. Among his customers were companies such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Nestlé, Kraft or Coca-Cola. In 2007 Pineapple Design became part of "Design Board Brussels/Sofia", a merger of experienced brand and packaging designers, who are internationally successful as consultants with Design Board. Rowland Heming is Business Development Director of Design Board, works as lecturer for packaging design at several Belgian universities, lectures worldwide and is committed to the PDA (Pan European Brand Design Association), the co-founder of which and former president he is.
Rob Vermeulen – lecturer for brand design
Rob Vermeulen studied free art at the Art Academy Breda before changing to a design degree at the Maastricht Art Academy. In 1976 he founded his own company which specialised mainly in corporate and packaging design and quickly gained international recognition. In 2009, Rob Vermeulen founded a new design agency under the name of "Vermeulen/Brand Design" and, in addition to his everyday work, is committed to the PDA Europe (Pan European Brand Design Association) since 1993, of which he was the president from 2003 to 2006. Furthermore, he is member of the two leading Dutch design associations BNO and Creating Brands. He gives presentations and works as a lecturer in the fields of communication and brand design at different institutes in Europe and is a member of several international expert juries.
The participation with posters, annual reports, video games, websites and further products of the communication industry will be possible only until 17 June 2011, whereas 24 different categories are available for the creatives’ submissions. Every participant can hand in any number of works which can be submitted in up to three different categories.
