Announcement at a press conference on 15 July 2011: red dot goes Berlin; the award ceremony of the "red dot award: communication design" takes place in the German capital for the first time!

red dot goes Berlin: the best talents in the design scene celebrate in the capital city!

For more than half a century, red dot has traditionally celebrated its legendary award ceremonies in Essen. This year, the major international design competition will tread new ground: Today, Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of red dot, announced in Berlin that this year for the first time the famous red dot is hosting a red dot gala – the highlight of the “red dot award: communication design 2011” – in Germany’s capital city. The initial results of this year’s jury meetings were published at the same time.

Creative artists from all over the world use the competition as a yardstick with which to measure themselves against the best in their industry. The study “Corporate Identity – Status Quo 2009, Expert survey of CI/CD agencies” (corporate identity institute, Mainz, Germany) put the award top of the list of all internationally relevant design competitions.

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec was particularly pleased to announce the winner of the “red dot: junior prize”. The “red dot: junior award” spans the entire communication design competition and is open to students and young professionals in order to give young designers the chance to gauge themselves against the who’s who of international design while paying a reduced entry fee.

The best work submitted by these up-and-coming talents wins the “red dot: junior prize”. In 2011 it is Martina Morth who has good reason to be pleased, with her utterly convincing work “Aufschwung durch Ableben” (Economic upswing through death). She impressed the jury members with a highly unusual annual report: On over 200 pages, Death looks back over the fiscal year 2009/2010, giving a macabre and yet revealing insight into the most successful year since the beginning of the undertaking. This innovative and creative idea stood out from all of the entries submitted and is the deserved winner of the prize money of EUR 10,000.

The lucky winners will be celebrated in the stylish atmosphere of the Konzerthaus in Berlin on 7 October 2011, where they will receive their trophies as part of the red dot gala. Afterwards the prizewinners can enjoy the party in the Alte Münze Berlin together with well-respected figures from industry, the media and design.

The former mint, which oversaw minting from the era of the Reichsmark and the GDR Mark to that of the Deutschmark and the Euro, provides a unique backdrop for the event, making it one of Berlin’s hottest locations. The special exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: communication design 2011” will be opened at this historical location as part of the Designer’s Night. The exhibition will be on show from 8 to 16 October 2011 for everyone who wants to check out the latest trends in communication design.
