Border crossers: red dot awarded design from Germany and the Netherlands at the Designhuis Eindhoven
The Netherlands are traditionally successful at the “red dot award: product design”. In the year 2011 alone, 46 winning products received this unique distinction. It is well known that both countries produce outstanding design and creative innovations – including collaborations. In April 2011, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, accompanied by Their Royal Highness Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, and Princess Máxima, assured herself of this fact. She visited the red dot design museum in the Ruhr-metropolis Essen.
Reasons enough to have a closer look at the achievements of both countries and return the favour: From 8 September to 9 October 2011, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen presents the best Dutch products, but also confronts them with German works in an unusual way. There is one thing they have in common: All of them convinced the jury of the red dot design award.
With its contemporary counterpoints, the exhibition picks up supposedly clichés of typical German and typical Dutch living environments in a novel way. It just does not play with traditional castings and rather presents advanced design objects, which unhinge obsolete thought patterns. When a German Mercedes used to be compared with a legendary and convenient Dutch bike in the past, “design at the border” presents an extremely safe, beautiful and functionally designed child car seat from Utrecht today.
“design at the border – red dot awarded design from Germany and the Netherlands” illustrates in an impressive and unusual way the differences of Dutch and German designs. The exhibition shows, where they are complementary and how both countries can learn from each other, in order to go new ways together in future.
