The red dot award: product design enters the next round!
With a history spanning more than 50 years, the “red dot award: product design” is one of the most important international product competitions. 4,433 entries from more than 60 countries in the year 2011 alone are proof of the competition’s international significance and reach. Designers and companies all over the world are again called on to submit their new designs and thus have their work assessed in a global comparison.
Who will it be this time to stand apart from the competition with their products and fill the red dot jury with enthusiasm? The official announcement will be made at the red dot gala on 2 July 2012 after an exciting competition and will then be published in the red dot design yearbook, the international reference work for excellent design achievements. The winning entries will also be on display ‘live’ in the world’s greatest design cities. The 2012 product design competition has just been officially launched in the Taiwanese megacity Taipei, where a high-profile red dot exhibition is showcasing the best of the best as part of the 2011 Taiwan World Design Expo.
The international red dot jury with its renowned design experts will decide who will be awarded the sought-after red dot, the seal of quality for excellent design, in 2012 in each of the 19 different categories. The experts will assess each individual piece of work during an evaluation process that lasts for several days. The jury will use specific criteria such as the degree of innovation, functionality or ecological compatibility to choose the best in each industry and award them the red dot for their excellent design work.
The proud winners will act as guiding lights for consumers when choosing between the myriad of products available and will also emphasise that excellent design is an important factor for entrepreneurial success. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot, explains that stable values are hugely significant especially in uncertain economic times: “Reliable indicators to set oneself apart from the competition are particularly valuable in phases of weak economic development. The red dot has been a globally recognised seal for excellent design quality for decades now. Consumers immediately recognise the distinctive logo – and it aids their decision in favour of a certain product. This is because the red dot stands not only for excellent design achievements but also for continuity and reliability. For companies, it is now more important than ever to win over undecided consumers for their product.”
