World Design Capital 2012: On 2 February 2012, Gala in Helsinki
Following Turin and Seoul, the World Design Capital 2012 is: Helsinki! “Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life” is the motto, under which numerous events are planned and Finnish Design can be experienced this year. The multi-faceted, year-round program includes about 300 projects and covers topics such as “Rethinking Design” and “Transforming the City”, giving answers to the question, how design can master the challenges of urban life.
Design is a highly visible part of the economic, cultural and public life of the Finnish capital. As a centre of creativity and innovation, Helsinki gains worldwide attention in 2012 and is expected to establish itself as an integral part of the international design network by its status as World Design Capital.
One highlight is the World Design Capital Gala on 2 February 2012: In this context, the design and architectural awards World Design Impact Prize, Alvar Aalto Medal and the Estlander Prize will be conferred. In front of a top-class audience, the festive event will take place at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti. In addition to the Gala of the WDC, the Helsinki Design Week and the Design District Helsinki also invite fans of good design to go on a creative journey of discovery for one year.
The World Design Capital is appointed every two years by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid). The goal is to optimise everyday life and living environment of residents through design and to give design a voice that is heard all over the world. “I am delighted that Helsinki was named World Design Capital 2012 and I want to extend my congratulations to the Director of the WDC, Pekka Timonen. Finland is a nation with a long tradition and a dignified heritage in the field of design. The authenticity of the materials as well as the focus on clean lines constitute Finnish Design and also form a solid foundation for the future,” says Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot and creator of the WDC spirit. In his term as Icsid President (2005-2007) he initiated the project “World Design Capital”.
