The jury of the red dot design award has met - 62 products received the “red dot: best of the best”
With more than 14,000 entries from over 70 countries, the red dot design award internationally reaches more advocates of good design than any other design competition. Its award, the red dot, is the distinctive quality seal for aesthetic forms, moving trends and designers with a strong sense of responsibility. Now it is clear who may decorate himself or herself with the appreciated award in the product design category in 2012.
There is no quality without comparative viewing” – the agency pioneer and advertising authority Vilim Vasata already held this opinion. About 1,800 companies and designers shared his view by submitting their best current products to the “red dot award: product design 2012”, thus facing up to the required comparison. This year again, exciting, sometimes path breaking design achievements from all over the world were registered and sent to the Design Zentrum NRW in Essen, Germany. From small- and medium-sized companies to notable entrepreneurs of all industrial sectors, from young talents to established designers – they all secured the chance of getting a red dot award.
The world goes through a time of political and economic change. There is one continuing trend, however: “Companies have realised that investing in design offers a considerable added value. In the end, the design of a product is the most important incentive for the purchase decision of a consumer,” explains Professor Dr. Peter Zec. “The red dot is not only an excellent marketing tool which generates a high degree of attention. It also serves as indicator for the creative performance of designers. Thus, these creative heads gain recognition for their work and companies can find out which designers achieve above-average results,” says the initiator and CEO of the red dot.
Only those participants who are able to prevail in the eyes of the top-class jury are awarded the red dot quality. The 30 international experts examined, tested and evaluated each individual product of altogether 4,515 entries – live as always and on-site. They applied different criteria such as the level of innovation, functionality, self-explanatory quality and environmental compatibility.
Products from 19 different categories had to be assessed in the evaluation process lasting several days – from small objects such as paper clips or hearing aids to furniture, cars and building projects. Beside the “red dot “quality seal for outstanding product design, the jury awards the “honourable mention”, distinguishing remarkable detail solutions. In addition, highest quality is honoured with the special award “red dot: best of the best”. This year, only 1,37 per cent of all entries received this prize. 71,23 per cent of all participants didn’t win an award.
17 young talents convinced the red dot jury with their excellent designs; they can be happy about their well-earned promotion as part of the red dot young professionals programme. It is the objective to enable the creative young talents a successful start into the world of design and facilitate their access to industry. In 2012, more than 200 young designers from 42 countries applied for the 50 free registrations for the “red dot award: product design 2012”.
