LiTraCon Light-transmitting Concrete
Mixture of optical glass fibre and fine concrete, forming an innovative building material with translucent characteristics.
Ultra-Light Multi-Material Wrench
Ergonomic wrench made of a new combination of cast steel and a robust aluminium alloy that meets highest standards of safe work inspite of its material lightness.
Ornilux Mikado Bird-Protection Glass
An innovative coating which is applied to the glass reflects UV light, so that birds won’t get injured thanks to their special ability to perceive UV light.

Call for papers: Seminar "Smart Materials for Design and Architecture"

How and to which extend do innovative, intelligent and high-tech materials contribute to the development of new products for a better life and a sounder environment? Are there examples for significant projects, where the choice of materials plays an essential role and leads to an improved quality of life and a sustainable development regarding environmental issues? In order to discuss this in the course of the seminar “Smart Materials for Design and Architecture”, designers, engineers and material developers worldwide are called upon to apply with their presentations to the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. Entry deadline is 14 May 2012.

Designing and manufacturing a new product is a complex process: You have to take formal, technical, production-specific, social and economic requirements into account. Thereby, the development of smart materials and material composites decisively influences the creative process: They contribute to designers improving on existing products as well as developing innovative products that are easier to handle, achieve an emotional effect, and, furthermore, consume less energy in the manufacturing process as well as in use.

How and to which extend are materials able to add to the development of products for a better life as well as for an intact environment? This question is at the heart of the seminar “Smart Materials for Design and Architecture” on Tuesday, 3 July 2012 to which the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen invites. Current approaches, developments and chances of new material in design are to be examined in the red dot design museum.

As of now, designers, engineers and material developers worldwide are called upon to apply for their chance to become a speaker and give an
insight into their experiences and results in the field of smart materials. They have the chance to speak in front of approximately 80 international seminar attendants and present their remarks in a 15-20 minutes lecture on one of these three key subjects:

- Light-weight materials
- Energy-saving materials
- Smart materials for emotional design

Anyone interested is asked to send a short CV (approx. ten lines/550 characters) as well as an abstract of the presentation (approx. 30 lines/1,650 characters) in English to Ms Alexis O’Connolly (oconolly(at)dznrw.com). Entry deadline is 14 May 2012.

An organisation committee of PROUD (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for innovation and co-creation) selects the speakers. PROUD is an in part funded project of the EU. The special exhibition “Moving Materials” will be held in parallel with the seminar from 3 July to 29 July 2012 in the red dot design museum.
