"Maitember" at the red dot design museum
Summer months have their own name in Essen: "Maitember". When the days start to get longer and the air gets warmer, the city invites to its many cultural- and recreational programmes. More than 400 leisure opportunities await the visitors from May to September. The services range from concerts, to (special) exhibitions in the museums, and bike trips along the impressive industrial culture highlights. Furthermore, there are various city district festivals, such as the “RÜ-Fest”, which will be held for the 24th time.
The red dot design museum takes part in "Maitember", too, and offers two guided tours free of charge. On 3 June and 22 July (both from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.) visitors get the chance to dive deeper into the world of contemporary design. More than 1,500 exhibits on an area of 4,000 square metres are waiting to be discovered. The former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein, which was rebuilt by star architect Lord Norman Foster in 1996, combines the industrial heritage of the city with current product culture and demonstrates the laureates of the red dot design award in a unique atmosphere.
