The evening of 24 October 2012 was marked by outstanding creative achievements: The “red dot award: communication design 2012” celebrated its brilliant culmination with a glamorous awards ceremony in the German capital. The evening offered suspense up to the last minute: It was not until the red dot gala that the agency of the year and the laureates of the junior prize were revealed as well as the awardees of the “red dot: grand prix”.
The coveted “red dot award: communication design”, which has been announced since 1993 – back then as the “Deutscher Preis für Kommunikationsdesign” – was bestowed for the 20th time. Today, it is one of the most renowned communication awards in the world.
Asia’s creative heart beats in Seoul – 601bisang is “red dot: agency of the year”
During the red dot gala, the team of 601bisang was honoured for their exceptional achievements in a special way: The South Korean design studio was bestowed the honorary title “red dot: agency of the year 2012”. No agency can apply for this distinction, which honours constantly outstanding design performances of the most creative minds.
H.E. Jae-Shin Kim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Germany, congratulated 601bisang for their success and expressed his pleasure that this honorary title was awarded to an Asian agency for the first time. He also expressed his confidence that the best agency of the year will establish itself as a “creative leader” and will inspire the industry with its unrivaled designs.
Kum-Jun Park, Creative Director of 601bisang about the success of the think tank: “In the past when I saw others going up onto the stage to receive their ‘red dot: agency of the year’ award, it crossed my mind that maybe someday I would be the one taking that walk. This dream has come true much sooner than I expected. To me, this is a reward for all the people we’ve gotten to work with over the years and for all the time and effort spent.”

Design stars, media representatives, business experts and politicians from all over the world attended the event to celebrate this year’s laureates. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of red dot, hosted the solemn awards ceremony in the glamorous Konzerthaus Berlin and welcomed red dot jurors Prof. Dr. Linda Breitlauch from Mediadesign Hochschule für Design und Informatik, design expert Prof. Michel de Boer, Riccardo Capuzzo from Design42Day, as well as Malgosia Pawlik-Leniarska from Dragron Rouge, who handed over the trophies.
About 1,200 guests showed their delight for the most courageous campaigns and best designs of the year. The evening offered many highlights for both the audience and the laureates. The mandolin performance by Israeli Avi Avital was one of many unforgettable treats.
Another one of those was the awarding of the “red dot: junior prize”. This year’s award, worth 10,000 euros, was given to Hochschule Niederrhein, whose motto is “overcome limits”. According to this philosophy their rewarded image film overcomes visual limits, without showing scenes from real life. The film emphasises the university’s profile in an unusual and creative way, thus distinguishing it from other universities. Furthermore, it turns the university’s motto into a film in a coherent and sophisticated way. The alumni Damon Aval, Stephen Erckmann and Jens Kindler received their certificates on stage in the Konzerthaus Berlin.
In 2012, the “red dot award: communication design” noted 6,823 entries. Creative bureaus, designers, talented newcomers and clients of communication works from 43 countries chased the world-wide recognised seal of quality. In a several-day-long evaluation process, 15 international experts picked those works that convinced them with their exceptional design. Billboard campaigns, annual reports or interface design – the awarded achievements speak for themselves with their aesthetics, originality and their message. The jury awarded 511 red dots for high design quality and 63 “red dot: best of the best” for highest design quality.
The laureates of the “red dot: grand prix” were kept a secret until the very last second. 15 communicative achievements set themselves apart as the best of their category, granting them the top individual award of the competition. Amongst them are Scholz & Friends with the packaging design “Fruit Figures”, which aims at provoking children’s’ appetite for fruits, the recruitment film “the first mark”, which draws attention to the world of career for McKinsey & Company, as well as “Current State: Snowboarding” by David Benedek, a book design for a picture book which deals with the status quo of the global snowboard culture.
Right after the red dot gala, the evening continued in the Alte Münze Berlin. The former coin mint is an in location today, where the design scene partied until the wee hours. Two high-class DJs opened up the dance floor: “Alle Farben” and Jan Pyroman delighted the guests with their mixes.
During the party the exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: communication design 2012” was opened. It will present award-winning communication design on the highest level until 28 October 2012. Furthermore, the “red dot: agency of the year” shows what is state of the art in an exclusive section of the venue – in their exhibition “Digilog 601: Harmony thru Design”.
Germany’s Federal Minister of Economics visited winner exhibition
Federal Minister of Economics and Technology and Vice Chancellor of Germany, Dr. Philipp Rösler, was impressed by the designer's outstanding and diverse achievements when he visited the winner's exhibition. He demonstrated steadfastness: Dr. Rösler stayed until past midnight at the vernissage and enjoyed every corner of the extensive exhibition. Together with ambassador H.E. Jae-Shin Kim and Prof. Dr. Zec, he moreover congratulated the "red dot: agency of the year" for their success.
