Design year 2012: "and the red dots went to…"
From an ultralight gyrocopter that convinced the red dot jury with its outstanding design and took off in the red dot design museum to the presentation of the new ŠKODA Rapid against the impressive backdrop of the museum and the glamorous awards ceremonies in Essen, Singapore and Berlin – in 2012, red dot once again offered unforgettable moments and once more underlined its global influence on the world of design.
On 2 July 2012, all eyes of the international design elite were on Essen, Germany: The red dot gala at the Aalto-Theater always marks the culmination of the “red dot award: product design” and has in recent years established itself as a festive ceremony attended by international guests. The highlight of the awards ceremony produced an imposing sound: Michael Mauer, head of Style Porsche, drove on stage in a 911 coupé to receive the highest design award – the distinction of being “red dot: design team of the year”. In keeping with the motto of design superlatives, the guests – among them German TV chef and this year’s laureate Sarah Wiener as well as car design legend and Head of Group Design at VW, Walter de Silva – celebrated at the red dot design museum into the wee hours.
For the first time in history, a red dot exhibition made it to Xiamen! The “China International Design Week – red dot in Xiamen” took place from 8 to 12 September and showed more than 100 works, all of which have been awarded the red dot within the last two years, as well as more than 1,000 superior design achievements that were realised both nationally and internationally. “red dot goes Asia” was also the motto in December: On 6 December and to keen interest from the media, the exhibition “German Design Standards - From Bauhaus to Globalisation” opened in Hong Kong. Until 4 March 2013, it narrates the success story of German design and describes it by means of numerous exhibits.
red dot shows commitment: In autumn, the starting signal for the red dot design laboratory was given. Together with the Province of Limburg, the city of Kerkrade and the “Discovery Center Continium”, red dot signed a memorandum of understanding for the project “Creative City”. The forum for creativity primarily addresses young people, for which a perfect platform for the realisation of their ideas will be provided. In a very symbolic act, the red dot was sprayed onto the square in front of the “Discovery Center Continium” marking the spot on which the buildings will come into existence.
The renowned members of the red dot jury know what they want and choose the best products and works of the year. red dot, for its part, knows how to worthily celebrate its laureates. The Aalto-Theater on 2 July can be mentioned as one milestone. Less than three months later, the evening of 24 October was marked by outstanding creative achievements: “20 years of outstanding communication design” needed to be appreciated. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of red dot, hosted the awards ceremony in the Konzerthaus Berlin and offered his audience suspense up to the last minute. For example, it was not until the red dot gala that the “red dot: agency of the year” was revealed. Federal Minister of Economics and Technology and Vice Chancellor of Germany, Dr. Philipp Rösler, was impressed by the winners’ exhibition and took the opportunity of the Designers’ Night to congratulate the “red dot: agency of the year” 601bisang from Seoul on its success.
A few days earlier, on 19 October, the proud winners of the “red dot award: design concept 2012” were honoured in Singapore. The “red dot award: design concept” is the only professional-level design concept competition to accept ideas and prototypes from all over the world, including product companies and design studios. It shows impressively just how exciting the future of design could be. We are already waiting for 2013!
red dot doesn’t forget to do good deeds: On 16 December 2012, it was time once again for Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen to auction off a selection of international design objects and attractively designed commodity items. From a barbeque grill to golf shoes and home appliances, toys and furniture – everything went under the hammer. And this, of course, for a good cause: Amnesty International was delighted to receive a cheque to the amount of EUR 5,165 and the visitors to the impressive auction were delighted by the excellent design. In July 2012 already, during a charity action, photos of the guests of the legendary winners’ dinner were sold and the entire proceeds were donated to UNICEF.
By now, the design world is already looking with anticipation at the “red dot award: product design 2013” that is already in full swing. From watches and jewellery to entertainment technology and cameras or the field of automotive and transportation – in 2013, an independent jury of internationally renowned design experts will examine each product of the 19 categories with their expert’s eye.
In 2013, the red dot design award will remain the worldwide leader in the selection and presentation of the best designs, not only in terms of the number of applications but also as far as qualitative standards are concerned. The most creative minds in the design scene will make sure of that.
