Red Dot Design Museum: two special exhibitions present this year's best product innovations
Every year in July, the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany, shows the award-winning products of the Red Dot Design Award. Besides this year’s winner exhibition “Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013”, the special exhibition “Communication+” will also provide visitors with exciting insights into the world of design.
“Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013”
In the midst of historical industrial architecture, the Red Dot Design Museum presents a four-week special exhibition of latest product culture: under the motto “Design on Stage”, elegant pieces of jewellery, innovative entertainment electronics or shapely designed furniture of designers from around the world are presented.
All of the designs were awarded the coveted Red Dot quality seal by 37 international design professionals after a several days lasting evaluation process. They convinced the expert panel of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013 with qualities such as ecological compatibility, outstanding functionality or their symbolic and emotional content, to name but a few.
The international innovations are exhibited on two floors. The award-winning designs are arranged by categories: a selection of iconic exhibits is placed on “islands” along the north-south axis of the museum. The presentation is completed by portraits of the Red Dot Design Award’s jury members as well as of the designers who created the outstanding products.
A special place is traditionally reserved for the exhibition of the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year, which is, in 2013, the Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo. The distinction is a special honour since no designer and no company can apply for it – a single award which stands out from all Red Dot distinctions.
The Lenovo Design & User Experience Team has received this highest appreciation for its exemplary design work, which has been internationally successful. Now, the creative minds led by Yao Yingjia, Vice President Lenovo Design & User Experience, present their innovative design achievements in the Red Dot Design Museum. The White Hall of the house, which is located on UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein, documents the evolution of the company's design language, which is driven by its very special design philosophy. The exhibition showcases a selection of award-winning products and how they evolved to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of the consumer markets.
“Communication+” is inspired by how our way of communication changes over a period of time, from a simple and traditional media like paper, into the latest advanced technology in today's digital era. And Lenovo is taking this evolution even further with adding emotion and user-experience and fuses them altogether in each of its product design.
This is the survival of the fittest of the digital era, where only the most relevant and user-oriented device can survive and excel in the markets. The message is visualised and materialised in the showcased creations: They carry the message of how we acknowledge and understand the importance of our communication in the past and present, and also leading the best way of communication in the future.
