red dot gathers innovative design-scene in Essen

Glamorous award ceremony of the red dot award: communication design 2003

On November 14th it showed: everybody who does not want to miss the newest design trends met in the red dot design museum for the award ceremony gala of the “red dot award: communication design”, which is held annually by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. 850 invited guests from the design scene, trade, culture and media celebrated the award winners in a sparkling evening. The successful event proves the highly magnetic effect the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has to the design economy.

Mervyn Kurlansky from Denmark, president of the design organisation Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), handed over the certificates for the “red dot: best of the best” prize winners together with Prof. Dr. Peter Zec.

Designers and agencies from 19 countries took part in the “red dot award: communication design 2003” with a total of 2,609 entries. 157 received the “red dot” quality label, 22 of them were honoured with the “red dot: best of the best” for highest design quality. “The high number of entries shows it: whoever wants to present himself successfully in the international design scene tries to win a red dot,” says Prof. Dr. Peter Zec.

In the centre of attention were the prize winners: The “red dot: junior prize” was awarded to Anja Mayr and Lucie Musilova for their book project “Hecken und Kanten” (Hedges and Edges). Lutz Hackenberg of the Alliance of German Designers (AGD) and Prof. Uli Braun, Fachhochschule Würzburg, congratulated the young designers and handed over the Euro 2,500 prize money sponsored by the AGD.

The design office Uebele from Stuttgart received the competition’s highest award, the “red dot: grand prix 2003” for an extraordinary orientation system for the office house of the DGF Stoess AG. The congratulator Prof. Uwe Loesch, a grand prix winner himself and a renowned communiction designer, praised Prof. Andreas Uebele in a conversational  laudation. This grand prix award is connected with a prize money of Euro 10,000, which makes it the most highly awarded prize for communication design in Europe. Volker Piel, managing partner of the sponsor, Thomas-Gruppe GmbH & Co. KG, handed over the prize money to Prof. Uebele.

Following the award ceremony the way led to the highly lit red dot design museum and there to the exhibition opening. The festivities in the old boiler house’s sublime atmosphere lasted till early in the morning.

The “red dot award: communication design 2003” special exhibition is open to visitors until 11 January 2004 in the red dot design museum.
