"Define Game Design" - exclusive Red Dot Award conference with game expert Daniel Budiman in Berlin

What is game design? Everything – that’s what Daniel Budiman, presenter of the TV show Game One, would say. But how can we even describe “everything”? By having renowned experts and industry gurus speak about their ideas and experiences relating to game design and inviting others to be part of the happening. Consequently, following on from last year’s success, Red Dot will present itself as a mediator for the creative industries once again in 2014 – with “Define Game Design” at the Café Moskau in Berlin on 23 October in collaboration with Daniel Budiman.

The conference is specially designed for all those who want to get closer to the field of communication design and the topic of game design in a modern and literally playful manner. Gamers, designers, marketing experts and others with an interest in the industry will be introduced to the core of game design, getting exciting insights into current topics and familiarising themselves with the latest projects in this all-encompassing and constantly advancing discipline. The objective is to create an interface between agencies, their clients and game designers and to thus provide opportunities for exchanging innovative ideas.

Based on the topics “Rules, Play and Culture” from the standard work for game design by Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman (“Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals”), the participants will be given a comprehensive overview of the current possibilities of (digital) design ventures, user-based experiences and of course games. In this way the conference aims to demonstrate to designers and producers of digital artefacts how games in general and different schemes of game design in particular can create and even improve user experiences – whether through games for educational, informative or entertainment purposes. In addition to big international names in the industry, some of the winners in the Game Design category of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2014 will give presentations and speak about their game design experiences.

7,096 products from 49 countries were entered in this year’s Red Dot Award: Communication Design. The international jury selected 569 of those works and awarded them a Red Dot for their high design quality. The panel of experts also awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best, the prize for top creative achievements, to 101 of the entries. Five Red Dot: Best of the Best awards were granted this year in the Game Design category alone. The competition winners will be celebrated on 24 October at the Red Dot Gala in the Konzerthaus in Berlin. Afterwards, the top names on the international design scene will celebrate together at the Designers’ Night in the E-Werk in Berlin. All Red Dot: Best of the Best works will be on show in the Museum für Kommunikation in Berlin from 26 October 2014.
