The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore relocates to Marina Bay

In 1955, the “Ständige Schau formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse” (Permanent Show of Elegant Industrial Products) was established in Villa Hügel in Essen, Germany. It evolved over the years to become the Red Dot Design Museum. Today, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany presents the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. It currently houses around 2,000 international design objects in the former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. All exhibits are award-winning design works from the Red Dot Design Award which is organised in three disciplines: product design, communication design and design concept.

Award ceremony, after-show party and exhibition opening: Red Dot honours the best in the design industry

The event to honour the designers and manufacturers that have won the Red Dot this year will take place on 3 July 2017. Each year, the award ceremony in Essen’s Aalto-Theater and the after-show party in the Red Dot Design Museum attract hundreds of representatives of the world’s best brands and design offices to the Ruhr Region. Participants from all over the globe entered thousands of products in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 to have them evaluated by the jury. Those objects that won over the 39-member expert jury with their well thought-through design won a Red Dot, while the best products of the year received the highest award in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Red Dot Award: Communication Design

The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is the jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Uwe Melichar, Damon Aval, Gustavo Greco and Holger Windfuhr will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017. The “Latecomer” registration phase runs until 9 June 2017.

In February, 39 experts from all over the world convened in Essen to assess thousands of objects for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 in a process spanning several days. Only designs that won over the jury with their high design quality were awarded the sought-after distinction “Red Dot”, and the best of them received the highest award “Red Dot: Best of the Best” – among them: the Omni Nightclub Taipei by The LOOP Inc., designed by Etai-Space Design Office.

Once a year, the jury of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design honours projects of high design quality. Among the works which received a Red Dot: Best of the Best, the jury awards the Red Dot: Grand Prix. In 2016, the top individual award was granted to the website “Iceberg Songs” designed by Serviceplan and Pan.Net for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In 2016, only 1.5 percent of all entries received the highest distinction “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. At the heart of the Red Dot Award: Product Design is its jury. With their specialist knowledge, about 40 recognised experts from around the world guarantee the high quality standards and thus the value of the Red Dot seal. In the end of February they gathered in order to test, discuss and assess every single entry in an evaluation process lasting several days. In 2017, Aleks Tatic was again part of the expert committee, for whom the role of design in everyday life has changed: “Because companies recognised the competetive factor ‘design’, they are running design more and everywhere.”
