Manufacturers and designers from 54 countries entered their current product innovations in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017. 39 experts from all over the world convened in Essen to assess each individual object live and in situ in a process spanning several days.

Once a year, the jury of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design honours projects of high design quality. Among the works which received a Red Dot: Best of the Best, the jury awards the Red Dot: Grand Prix. In 2016, the top individual award was granted to “The Real Time Brand”, designed by Grey Germany/KW43 Branddesign and Maruri Grey.

The registration phase of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017 is currently underway. The Red Dot Award opens agencies, designers and companies the doors to a worldwide network of creative and design-oriented companies and offers the winners exclusive opportunities to communicate their success. One of the “Winners' Benefits” is the presentation of the award-winning work and its makers in the International Yearbook Communication Design.

Red Dot Design-Ranking 2016 – outstanding performances by institutions

The Red Dot Design Ranking for design concepts tracks and measures the success of an organisation in producing exciting new design concepts over a period of time. The Red Dot jury of 21 international design experts awarded five institutions with the Red Dot: Best of the Best, in recognition of the outstanding effort and quality designs, one of them is "ENSCI - Les Ateliers".

Designers and manufacturers can currently register their products for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017. “Young Professionals Application Day” provides an opportunity for upcoming designers to also take part in the competition. On 7 December 2016, trained designers who have graduated within the past five years have the chance to apply for one of a total of 50 free registration places. The international design competition thus gives an opportunity to those starting out on their career to prove their abilities and be compared directly against established designers and major brands from the industry.

In the Red Dot Award: Communication Design, young talents are supported in a special way. Who was able to make the Red Dot: Best of the Best sure for him- or herself, also has the opportunity to receive the Red Dot: Junior Prize for the best newcomer work, endowed with 10,000 € – this is the chance for the creative youth to make a breakthrough in design and convince potential clients of their proper skills. In 2016, the Red Dot: Junior Prize went to Taiwan: Mu-Yi Chi and Yi-Sin Lin from Tatung University in Taipei received it for their animation “Meet, or Not”.


“Under the Sign of the Circle”: Red Dot Design Museum presents exhibition on innovations from Japan

“Under the Sign of the Circle”: This is the title of the exhibition to be presented in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany from 25 November 2016 to 19 March 2017 on Red Dot awarded design innovations from Japan. From living, telecommunications and media to packaging design and posters – around 100 exhibits from Japanese designers and manufacturers will be on show. The focus is on technological innovations, for which Japan is very well known.

On 9 November 2016, the “Design Korea” trade fair opened, which brings Korean and international companies, designers and buyers together. Visitors can inform themselves about current trends and use the forum for networking until 13 November. Red Dot is on site, too, and presents current prize-winning products in the course of its “Red Dot on Tour” programme. The Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE) hosts the business event since 2003, which is organised by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP).

Already since the middle of the 1990s, the Red Dot Award maintains excellent contacts and partnerships with South Korea. Numerous Korean designers and manufacturers participate in the competition and use the well-known Red Dot seal to set themselves apart from their competitors on the market and to attract attention to the good design quality of their products. Moreover, Red Dot CEO Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, as initiator of the “World Design Capital” programme, had substantially contributed that the South Korean capital Seoul received this title in 2010, which is granted by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).
