The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore relocates to Marina Bay

In 1955, the “Ständige Schau formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse” (Permanent Show of Elegant Industrial Products) was established in Villa Hügel in Essen, Germany. It evolved over the years to become the Red Dot Design Museum. Today, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany presents the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. It currently houses around 2,000 international design objects in the former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. All exhibits are award-winning design works from the Red Dot Design Award which is organised in three disciplines: product design, communication design and design concept.

Award ceremony, after-show party and exhibition opening: Red Dot honours the best in the design industry

The event to honour the designers and manufacturers that have won the Red Dot this year will take place on 3 July 2017. Each year, the award ceremony in Essen’s Aalto-Theater and the after-show party in the Red Dot Design Museum attract hundreds of representatives of the world’s best brands and design offices to the Ruhr Region. Participants from all over the globe entered thousands of products in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 to have them evaluated by the jury. Those objects that won over the 39-member expert jury with their well thought-through design won a Red Dot, while the best products of the year received the highest award in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Red Dot Award: Communication Design

The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is the jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Uwe Melichar, Damon Aval, Gustavo Greco and Holger Windfuhr will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017. The “Latecomer” registration phase runs until 9 June 2017.

In February, 39 experts from all over the world convened in Essen to assess thousands of objects for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 in a process spanning several days. Only designs that won over the jury with their high design quality were awarded the sought-after distinction “Red Dot”, and the best of them received the highest award “Red Dot: Best of the Best” – among them: the Omni Nightclub Taipei by The LOOP Inc., designed by Etai-Space Design Office.

Manufacturers and designers from 54 countries entered their current product innovations in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017. 39 experts from all over the world convened in Essen to assess each individual object live and in situ in a process spanning several days.

Der japanische Architekt erhält die UIA-Goldmedaille Die seit 1984 alle drei Jahre vergebene UIA-Goldmedaille geht in diesem Jahr an den japanischen Architekten Tadao Ando. Diese Ehrung für sein Lebenswerk wird vom Ausrichter als Pendant zum Nobelpreis verstanden. Die feierliche Preisverleihung erfolgte am 6. Juni anlässlich des 22. UIA-Kongresses in Istanbul.

As in every year, the current and future trends of contemporary living design are being presented, and this year too there are of course many interesting and exciting things to see. Philippe Starck, for instance, who is always good for a surprise, shows a desk lamp with a pistol-shaped stand and the telling name “Gun Lamp.” Politically engaged design or bad taste? Anyways, Starck knows how to be a polarising figure.
