The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore relocates to Marina Bay

In 1955, the “Ständige Schau formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse” (Permanent Show of Elegant Industrial Products) was established in Villa Hügel in Essen, Germany. It evolved over the years to become the Red Dot Design Museum. Today, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany presents the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. It currently houses around 2,000 international design objects in the former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. All exhibits are award-winning design works from the Red Dot Design Award which is organised in three disciplines: product design, communication design and design concept.

Award ceremony, after-show party and exhibition opening: Red Dot honours the best in the design industry

The event to honour the designers and manufacturers that have won the Red Dot this year will take place on 3 July 2017. Each year, the award ceremony in Essen’s Aalto-Theater and the after-show party in the Red Dot Design Museum attract hundreds of representatives of the world’s best brands and design offices to the Ruhr Region. Participants from all over the globe entered thousands of products in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 to have them evaluated by the jury. Those objects that won over the 39-member expert jury with their well thought-through design won a Red Dot, while the best products of the year received the highest award in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

Red Dot Award: Communication Design

The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is the jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Johnasson Lo, Niels Schrader and Peter Philippe Teufel will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017.

In February, 39 experts from all over the world convened in Essen to assess thousands of objects for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 in a process spanning several days. Only designs that won over the jury with their high design quality were awarded the sought-after distinction “Red Dot”, and the best of them received the highest award “Red Dot: Best of the Best” – among them: the Omni Nightclub Taipei by The LOOP Inc., designed by Etai-Space Design Office.

Richard Sapper Exhibition in Berlin

Revitalisation of Iconic Chair

The California-based design studio BMW Group DesignworksUSA and an aluminium chair company, Emeco have revitalised an iconic Emeco chair popular in the 1950s. The recreation was prompted by the discovery of the original chair on the auction website eBay. Designed by Adrian van Hooydonk, the modern “1951” version will debut at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, taking place from April 13 to April 19, 2005.

The death of the universal consumer After the race for the best technical innovations in the last years, companies now increasingly focus on sophisticated designs meeting the demands of target-groups in order to keep their position in the competition. The consumer’s needs are coming more and more into the spotlight, when it comes to finding the ideal form for a product. This was shown by observations during the selection process of the red dot award: product design 2005.
