Carlos Hinrichsen

Carlos Hinrichsen is industrial designer (Chile 1982) and Master of Engineering (Japan 1991). Since 1992, he has been director of the School of Design at the Instituto Profesional DuocUC of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and was head of the DuocUC Design Center from 1998 to 2003. As co-founder of the Chilean design firm 3Design, he was well known in the Chilean market from 1982 to 1996. 3Design created all kinds of products including furniture, bicycles or refrigerators. Today he is active as a member of the board of directors of the Chilean firm Mechanical Studio (www.mechanicalstudio.cl), established by some of his students in 2001. Carlos Hinrichsen has participated as a jury member in national and international design contests and has coordinated the cooperation agreements of the School of Design DuocUC with important Japanese, European and Asian universities and/or organisations. Since 1991, he has participated as research director in projects concerning innovation in design education using new technologies. From 1997 on, he has conducted research into design and manufacturing fields financed by Chilean government grants and the support of private companies or firms. Carlos Hinrichsen was a Icsid board member for 2001 to 2003 and 2003 to 2005 terms. Since 2002, he has been an honorary member of the Chilean association of design firms QVID (www.qvid.cl). In 2005, he became president elect of Icsid, and in autumn 2007, he will take office as president of Icsid (www.icsid.org).
